How to monetize a small stream with no subscribers
Every guide tells you to grow first and monetize later. That advice quietly assumes you can afford to stream for free for six months.
Here is what is actually available at zero followers.
The thresholds, as of 2026
These are the numbers that decide what you can even attempt:
- YouTube — you need 50 subscribers to go live from a phone. From a computer there is no subscriber minimum at all, only channel verification. Between 50 and 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may also cap how many people can watch a mobile stream.
- Twitch — anyone can stream immediately, from a phone or a computer. The 50-follower figure people quote is the Affiliate threshold, which is about getting paid by Twitch, not about being allowed to broadcast.
- Kick — no minimum to stream. Their creator program needs 75 followers and 5 hours streamed.
- TikTok — 1,000 followers and 18+.
- Instagram — 1,000 followers and a public account, since August 2025.
- X — you need a paid Premium subscription just to go live.
The trap for beginners: YouTube is the platform most people try first, and it is the one that blocks a phone-only beginner. If you have a laptop, stream from the laptop and the wall disappears.
What you can do below every threshold
Take tips directly. Nothing stops you from accepting money from your own viewers. Platform monetization programs have thresholds; your own donation link does not.
Make it visible. A payment link in your description converts badly because nobody sees it happen. When a tip triggers something on screen, the next viewer knows it is a thing people do here. This is the single biggest difference between streams that earn at 5 viewers and streams that do not.
Do not wait for an audience. Five engaged viewers who like you will out-earn five hundred passive ones. The number that matters is not viewers, it is how many of them feel involved.
The uncomfortable math
At five concurrent viewers, realistic tipping is a few dollars a night. That is not a living. Anyone promising otherwise is selling something.
What it is: proof that the loop works. If nobody tips at five viewers, more viewers will not fix it — the problem is the loop, not the number. Better to find that out now.
Where to start
- Stream from a computer if you have one. It removes YouTube's phone restriction entirely.
- Set up tipping before you think you are ready. An empty tip jar earns nothing, but so does no tip jar.
- Make tips visible on screen.
- Ask once per stream, plainly, and then stop asking.
